Christmas Gift Ideas

It’s that time of the year again where we are constantly looking for good Christmas gift ideas.

But what should you the the loved ones in your life?  Things that they will enjoy and will help promote self-sufficiency.  They may not be a homesteader, prepare, modern survivalist, etc – and they don’t have to be to make the most of the right gifts.

However, a gift is pretty useless if it doesn’t appeal to the person you give it to.  Choose wisely!

Some of my Christmas gift ideas:

Books

Backyard Homestead – This book provides some great ideas for foods that you can produce in your own backyard.  Spending time during the winter to plan out your garden and other projects for the year can save you time come the spring.  I reviewed the book here.

Sepp Holzer’s PermacultureA Practical Guide to Small-Scale, Integrative Farming & Gardening.  To have personal sovereignty, you have to take control of your own food supply.  Permaculture is a field of study that helps you to understand the natural processes and solve problems as they arise.  This description does not do it justice – just know that you will be blown away by permaculture.  And Sepp Holzer is the mensch when it comes to Permaculture and Hugelkulture.

The Farmer’s Almanac – The original farmer’s almanac since 1792.  Full of planting info for your garden, predictions of the weather for the year ahead, household tips & tricks, and more for your modern homestead.  This is a very inexpensive gift.

Gear

5.11 Tactical EDC pack.  Either the MOAB 10 sling pack or the Rush 12 backpack will make anybody happy.  Very durable construction will last many years for their everyday carry.  I recently purchased the MOAB 10 and share my initial thoughts here.

SOG Flash 2 Knife.  I carry this knife in my pocket everyday.  There are many combinations of blade colour and configuration.  Mine is a partially serrated Tanto.

Magazines Subscriptions

Backwoods Home Magazine – Covering natural living and modern homesteading in a better way the the more hippie Mother Earth News (which is also a good Christmas gift in itself).

Explore Magazine – Canada’s magazine for outdoor exploration and adventure.  Learn about new trails, camping areas, outdoor gear, and read adventure stories.  This is a great magazine for all Canadians.

Health, Fitness, & Wellness

Ross Enamait Products – I have been following Ross for many years.  Though his blog has tremendous information, his exercise products are even better.

MCT Oil – This can be used to kickstart your brain in the morning.  Use it with cream or butter in your coffee for your own version of Bulletproof Coffee

Food & Drink

A beer or wine making kit.  I decided to start making my own beer 1) because it is a skill that I want to have.  2) so that I can control the ingredients that I put in it.  and 3) because I am tired to paying the excessive government taxes.

A meat grinder or sausage stuffer from Princess Auto.  This is an area that I am keen to start into my self come the new year.

What have you got for the people in your life?  Do you have any ideas?  Anything on your list that could help promote personal sovereignty?
