Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 27, 2026

This website, Sovereign Canadian (sovereigncanadian.com), is operated from Ontario, Canada. I take your privacy seriously and I’ve written this policy in plain language so you can actually understand what’s collected, why, and what your choices are. If anything here is unclear, email me — contact details are at the bottom.

This policy is designed to reflect Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). If you visit from the European Economic Area or the UK, it also addresses your rights under the GDPR.

What information is collected

Information you choose to give me. If you leave a comment, send an email, or subscribe to the newsletter, you provide information about yourself — typically your name and email address, plus whatever you write. Comments and their metadata are retained so the discussion stays intact.

Information collected automatically. Like almost every website, this site records standard technical data when you visit: your IP address, browser type, device information, the pages you view, the time and date of your visit, and the site you came from. This is gathered through server logs and cookies (explained below) and is used in aggregate to understand how the site is used.

Cookies and analytics

A cookie is a small text file a website stores in your browser. This site uses cookies to remember your preferences (for example, saving your details if you opt in when commenting) and to measure traffic.

For traffic measurement I use Google Analytics, which helps me see which posts are popular and how visitors move through the site. Google Analytics sets its own cookies and processes this data on my behalf; you can read how Google handles it in Google’s privacy policy, and you can opt out site-wide using Google’s Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on. You can also set your browser to refuse cookies, though some features may not work as smoothly if you do.

Affiliate links

Some posts may contain affiliate links, including through the Amazon Associates program. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Affiliate partners may set their own cookies to attribute a purchase; that activity is governed by their privacy policies, not this one.

Email and the newsletter

If you subscribe to the Sovereign Newsletter, your email address is stored with MailerLite and used only to send you the newsletter and occasional updates. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time. I don’t sell or rent your address.

How your information is used

Your information is used to operate and improve the site: to publish and manage comments, respond to your emails, send the newsletter you asked for, understand aggregate traffic, and keep the site secure. Aggregate, non-identifying data may be used to improve content. Personally identifiable information is not shared except as described below.

How information is shared

I do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. It may be shared only with the service providers described above (hosting, analytics, email, and — if applicable — advertising) strictly so they can perform those functions, or where I’m legally required to disclose it, or where disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the site, its users, or the public.

Where your data is stored

This site is hosted by Bluehost, whose servers are located in the United States (primarily Virginia). If you subscribe to the newsletter, MailerLite provides its service to customers outside the EEA, UK, and Switzerland — which includes Canada — through its US entity, so subscriber data is stored in the United States as well.

This means your information is stored and processed outside Canada and may be subject to the laws of the United States, including lawful access by US courts, law enforcement, or government authorities. The laws protecting personal information there may differ from those in your own province or country. Reasonable physical, electronic, and administrative safeguards are used to protect the information collected.

Your rights and choices

You can ask to access the personal information held about you, request that it be corrected, or ask that it be deleted. You can withdraw consent — for example, by unsubscribing from the newsletter or asking to have a comment removed. To make a request, email me at the address below.

If you’re in Canada and aren’t satisfied with how a privacy concern is handled, you have the right to contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. If you’re in the EEA or UK, you have additional rights under the GDPR, including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Other websites linked from this one

This site links to other websites. I’m not responsible for the privacy practices or content of sites I don’t operate. Once you follow a link away from here, this policy no longer applies — read the destination site’s own policy.

Children

This site isn’t directed at children and doesn’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information here, contact me and I’ll remove it.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as practices, tools, or laws change. The effective date at the top will always show the current version, so check back periodically. Material changes won’t be applied to previously collected information in a way that’s inconsistent with the policy in place when it was collected, without consent.
